A 1U dual-socket rack server with two 20-core Xeon Gold 6148 CPUs, 64GB DDR4, eight 400GB SATA SSDs on an H730P controller, quad-port 1GbE and 10Gb SFP+ networking, iDRAC9 Enterprise.
The Dell PowerEdge R640 is a 1U rack server built for dense scale-out data centre computing. It ships with two Intel Xeon Gold 6148 processors, each running at 2.4 GHz with 20 cores. The system includes 64 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across 24 DIMM slots. Eight 400 GB SATA SSDs are installed behind the PERC H730P RAID controller.
This configuration suits virtualisation clusters, database nodes and high-density compute farms that need dual-socket performance in a single rack unit. The quad-port 10GbE and 1GbE network daughter card supports heavy east-west traffic. Buyers who need GPU acceleration or more than 3 TB of memory should look at a different platform. The 750 W redundant power supplies support the installed components only.
The Dell PERC H730P storage controller provides 2 GB of battery-backed cache and supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode. It manages the eight 400 GB SATA SSDs over a 12 Gb/s SAS/SATA interface. This controller choice determines the RAID levels and drive throughput available to the operating system.

Other versions of this model
Slide each SSD into a hot-swap tray until the latch clicks, then insert the tray into the bay until it locks; the step often missed is seating the tray firmly so the backplane connector fully engages.
The battery-backed write cache on the H730P controller will eventually require replacement when the battery health status reports degraded capacity.
The 750 W redundant PSUs set the power ceiling; sustained full CPU and drive load will hit that wattage limit before thermal throttling occurs.
