Dual-socket 1U rack server

The Dell PowerEdge R640 is a 1U rack server built for dense scale-out data centre computing. It ships with two Intel Xeon Gold 6148 processors, each running at 2.4 GHz with 20 cores and a 3.7 GHz turbo frequency. The system includes 512 GB of DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC memory across 16 modules. This configuration targets workloads that demand high core counts and large memory capacity in a compact form factor.

Storage controller and networking bundle

The integrated Dell PERC H730P 2 GB controller provides 12 Gb/s SAS and SATA connectivity with battery-backed cache. It supports RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 as well as pass-through mode. Eight 1.2 TB 10K SAS 2.5-inch drives are pre-installed. A quad-port Intel X520/I350 daughter card adds two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ network interfaces. iDRAC 9 Enterprise enables full remote management.

SAS interface and 1U density limits

The SAS 12 Gb/s interface governs the maximum throughput between the controller and the installed drives. The 1U chassis restricts the server to eight 2.5-inch drive bays, limiting raw storage expansion without external enclosures. Only two processor sockets are available, so CPU upgrades cannot exceed the current dual-socket configuration. Memory capacity can grow to 3 TB using the remaining DIMM slots. Buyers who need more internal drive bays or additional CPU sockets will require a larger chassis.

Questions about this item

How often will the PERC H730P controller battery need replacement?

The PERC H730P includes a 2GB cache battery that typically lasts several years; Dell recommends checking battery health via iDRAC 9 Enterprise during routine maintenance.

Which component reaches its thermal limit first during continuous full-load operation?

The dual Xeon Gold 6148 processors at 2.4GHz base and 3.7GHz turbo will hit their thermal envelope before the 750W platinum power supplies or memory subsystem.

What is the typical power draw and noise level when the server runs 24/7 with all eight 1.2TB SAS drives active?

Dual 750W platinum supplies provide redundancy; actual draw depends on workload but the platform is designed for efficient 1U density with iDRAC 9 monitoring thermal and fan status.
