1U rack server with dual 20-core Xeon Gold 6148 processors at 2.4 GHz, 256 GB DDR4 ECC memory, PERC H730P RAID controller, two 300 GB 10K SAS drives, quad-port 1/10 GbE networking, iDRAC9 Enterprise.
The PowerEdge R640 packs two Xeon Gold 6148 20-core processors at 2.4 GHz with 3.7 GHz turbo into a 1U rack chassis. It ships with 256 GB of DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC memory across eight 32 GB modules. A PERC H730P 2 GB controller manages SAS and SATA drives with RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, 60 and pass-through modes. Dual 750 W platinum power supplies and iDRAC9 Enterprise remote management complete the dense scale-out platform.
This server fits workloads that need high core counts, redundant power and integrated 10 GbE plus 1 GbE networking in a single rack unit. Buyers who need more than 24 DIMM slots or more than 3 TB of memory should look at larger platforms. Environments requiring only a single processor or non-redundant power will find the configuration overspecified. The 2.5-inch drive bays limit raw capacity compared with 3.5-inch alternatives.
The installed 256 GB across eight 32 GB modules occupies eight of 24 slots and runs at 2666 MHz. This capacity and speed combination determines how many virtual machines or database instances the node can support before a memory upgrade is required.

Other versions of this model
The server provides 24 DDR4 slots total, with eight occupied by the installed 32GB modules, leaving the remaining slots available for expansion toward the 3TB maximum.
The PERC H730P controller with its 2GB cache and 12Gb/s SAS interface governs the maximum sustained write speed to the installed 300GB 10K SAS drives.
Dual 750W platinum power supplies share the load efficiently, and the 1U chassis uses variable-speed fans that ramp with CPU temperature to manage heat and noise.
