A 1U rack server with dual 24-core Xeon Platinum 8160 processors at 2.1 GHz, 256 GB DDR4 ECC memory, PERC H730P RAID controller, and two 400 GB SATA SSDs for dense scale-out workloads
The Dell PowerEdge R640 is a dual-socket rack server built for scale-out workloads in space-constrained data centres. Two Intel Xeon Platinum 8160 processors provide 24 cores each at a base frequency of 2.1 GHz. The system ships with 256 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across 24 DIMM slots.
This configuration targets buyers who need high core density and fast local storage in a single rack unit. The PERC H730P controller supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 for database or virtualisation storage. Organisations requiring GPU acceleration or more than eight 2.5-inch drive bays should evaluate alternative platforms.
The installed Xeon Platinum 8160 CPUs define the compute ceiling: each socket delivers 24 cores with a maximum turbo frequency of 3.7 GHz. Memory capacity can grow to 3 TB using the remaining DDR4 slots. Network connectivity includes two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ ports via the X520/I350 daughter card.

Open the PERC H730P BIOS utility at boot (Ctrl+R) or use iDRAC9 Enterprise to confirm both 400GB SSDs appear, show healthy status, and the desired RAID level (0/1/5/6/10/50/60) is active with the 2GB cache battery operational.
Included: 2x Xeon Platinum 8160 2.1GHz 24-core CPUs, 256GB DDR4 (8x 32GB 2666MHz ECC), PERC H730P 2GB controller, 2x 400GB SATA SSDs, Intel X520/I350 quad-port (2x 1GbE, 2x 10Gb SFP+), iDRAC9 Enterprise, 2x 750W PSUs, rails, bezel. Add: extra 2.5" drives, SFP+ modules, OS licences.
The system has 24 DDR4 slots with 8x 32GB modules installed (256GB). To expand, add registered ECC DDR4 2666MHz DIMMs in matched sets per CPU until the 3TB maximum; keep population rules balanced across the 12 slots per processor.
