Dense 1U compute platform

The Dell PowerEdge R640 is a dual-socket 1U rack server built for scale-out workloads. Two Xeon Silver 4110 processors deliver sixteen cores at 2.1 GHz with 3.0 GHz turbo. 512 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory fills sixteen of twenty-four slots. Eight 800 GB SATA SSDs provide high-density flash storage in the 2.5 inch bays.

Controller and networking foundation

A PERC H730P 2 GB controller manages the eight drives with RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, 60 and pass-through modes. The Intel X520/I350 daughter card adds two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ ports for flexible fabric connectivity. iDRAC 9 Enterprise gives full out-of-band control. Redundant 750 W platinum power supplies and sliding rails complete the deployment kit.

Sustained throughput under load

The 1U chassis uses high-volume airflow to keep both CPUs and the storage controller at operating temperature during continuous duty. Platinum-efficiency power supplies reduce waste heat while maintaining redundant delivery. The H730P battery-backed cache protects in-flight writes during unexpected power events. Sixteen populated DIMM slots leave eight slots open for future memory expansion.

Questions about this item

How much DDR4 memory can the R640 take before I hit the ceiling?

The board has 24 slots and supports up to 3TB of DDR4 2400MHz registered ECC, so the limit is the 3TB maximum capacity.

What kind of heat and noise should I expect from the dual 750W platinum supplies and two 8-core Xeons running 24/7?

Redundant 750W platinum units and hot-swap fans keep the 1U chassis cool under load; expect typical enterprise rack noise levels from the dual Silver 4110 processors and power supplies.

Which networking modules or cables do I need to use the X520/I350 daughter card's 10 Gb SFP+ ports?

The card includes two 10 Gb SFP+ cages that require compatible SFP+ transceivers or direct-attach cables, which are not included with the server.
