Dense 1U Dual-Socket Platform

The PowerEdge R640 is a 1U rack server built for dense scale-out data center computing. It ships with two Intel Xeon Silver 4110 processors, each running at 2.1 GHz with 8 cores. The system includes 64 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across four 16 GB modules. This configuration targets workloads that need high compute density in a single rack unit.

H730P Controller and Network Daughter Card

The Dell PERC H730P 2 GB storage controller supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode. It manages eight 1.2 TB 10K SAS drives installed in the 2.5-inch bays. The Intel X520/I350 daughter card adds two 1 GbE ports and two 10 Gb SFP+ ports for flexible network connectivity. iDRAC 9 Enterprise provides dedicated remote management.

SAS 12 Gb/s Interface and Dual-CPU Ceiling

The SAS backplane operates at 12 Gb/s, limiting drive throughput to that bus speed. Only two processor sockets exist, so the system cannot scale beyond the installed pair of Xeon Silver 4110 CPUs. Memory capacity tops out at 3 TB across 24 slots, but the current 64 GB uses just four slots. The 1U form factor restricts expansion to low-profile cards only.

Questions about this item

How often should the PERC H730P controller battery be checked or replaced?

The PERC H730P includes a 2 GB cache battery; plan to test it annually and replace it every three to five years to keep write-back caching protected.

Which component reaches its limit first when all eight 1.2 TB 10 K SAS drives run sustained write workloads?

The 12 Gb/s SAS backplane and H730P controller set the sustained throughput ceiling before the dual 2.1 GHz Xeon Silver 4110 CPUs or 64 GB DDR4 memory become bottlenecks.

What noise and heat levels should I expect from the dual 750 W platinum PSUs and fans during 24/7 operation?

Redundant 750 W platinum supplies and 1U high-speed fans keep the chassis within spec, but the rack will emit noticeable airflow noise and exhaust heat under continuous load.
