Dual-socket 1U server for dense scale-out compute

The Dell PowerEdge R640 is a 1U rack server built for dense scale-out data centre workloads. Two Intel Xeon Silver 4116 processors deliver 24 cores at 2.1 GHz with 3.0 GHz turbo. 64 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across four modules supports virtualization and database tiers. Eight 300 GB 10K SAS drives connect through a PERC H730P controller with 2 GB cache.

Redundant 750 W platinum supplies

Dual hot-swap 750 W platinum power supplies provide redundancy without external UPS dependency. The 1U chassis uses front-to-rear airflow tuned for rack density. iDRAC 9 Enterprise enables remote power cycling, console redirection and firmware updates over a dedicated management port. Quad-port networking adds two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ links on a single daughter card.

PERC H730P battery-backed cache and ready rails

The H730P battery protects write-cache during power loss, enabling RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 without data risk. Included ready rails allow tool-less mounting in standard four-post racks. The front bezel secures drive bays and filters airflow. No SSD storage is installed; buyers needing flash tiers must add drives separately.

Questions about this item

How do I install the 2.5" SAS drives into the 8-bay front panel, and what step do people skip?

Slide each drive into a bay until the carrier clicks, then press the release latch to lock it; the step often missed is seating the latch fully so the drive registers with the PERC H730P controller.

Which components will need replacement first under continuous operation?

The eight 300 GB 10K SAS drives and the two 750 W redundant power supplies are the primary field-replaceable units; the PERC H730P battery-backed cache module also requires periodic replacement.

What thermal or power limit appears first when both Xeon Silver 4116 CPUs run at 3.0 GHz turbo across all 12 cores?

The dual 750 W platinum power supplies set the ceiling; sustained all-core turbo on both 12-core processors can draw enough current to trigger power-supply throttling before the 1U cooling reaches its limit.
