Built for virtualisation and dense storage

This Dell PowerEdge R640 is a 1U rack server equipped with dual Xeon Gold 6130 processors, 512GB of DDR4 memory and 30.72TB of enterprise SATA SSDs. It targets small businesses and enterprise environments that run virtualised workloads, private clouds or software-defined storage. The redundant power supplies and iDRAC9 remote management keep critical applications available around the clock.

Installation notes and common issues

The server ships with a rail kit for rack mounting, but the hard drives and memory upgrades are supplied separately and must be installed before use. Hot-swappable power supplies allow a failed unit to be replaced without downtime. Take care when seating the 16 DIMMs and eight 2.5-inch SSDs; incorrect insertion is the most frequent cause of a failed POST.

Compatibility checklist

Verify that your rack provides standard 1U spacing and adequate airflow for a dual-processor chassis. Confirm the PERC H730 RAID controller matches your planned array level and that the Broadcom BCM5720 quad-port 1GbE adapter suits your network infrastructure. Ensure you have a Windows Server 2022 Standard licence for the 16-core entitlement included with this unit.

Questions about this item

How do I verify the PERC H730 RAID controller and all eight 3.84TB SSDs are recognised after setup?

Open iDRAC9 Express, check the storage tab for the PERC H730 controller status and confirm all eight 3.84TB drives show as online in the virtual disk view.

What ships inside the box and what must I source separately?

The 1U chassis, rail kit, dual redundant power supplies, dual Xeon Gold 6130 CPUs, sixteen 32GB DDR4 DIMMs, eight 3.84TB SATA SSDs, PERC H730 RAID card and Broadcom BCM5720 quad-port NIC are included; OS media and Client Access Licences are not.

Which configuration suits a virtualisation host needing maximum memory headroom?

The 512GB DDR4 3200MHz population using all sixteen DIMM slots leaves no empty slots for further expansion, so choose it only if 512GB meets the projected VM density.
