DELL

DELL PowerEdge R640 1U rack server Dual Xeon 6148 2.40 GHz 512GB 15.36TB

SKU CH-0W5D-ZVK30

A 1U rack server with dual 20-core Xeon 6148 processors at 2.40 GHz, 512GB DDR4 memory, and 15.36TB of enterprise SATA SSD storage

  • Product typeRack
  • Dual 20-core Xeon 6148 CPUs at 2.40 GHz for heavy parallel workloads
  • 512 GB DDR4 3200 MHz memory across 16 DIMMs for large datasets
  • 36 TB enterprise SATA SSD storage on eight 1.92 TB drives
  • PERC H730 RAID controller with 2 GB cache protects data integrity
  • Redundant power supplies and iDRAC9 Express keep systems running remotely

Purpose-built density

The Dell PowerEdge R640 is a 1U rack server built for virtualization, dense software-defined storage and high-performance computing. Dual Xeon Gold 6148 processors provide 20 cores each at 2.40 GHz with turbo up to 3.70 GHz. The system ships with 512GB of DDR4 PC4-25600 memory and 15.36TB of enterprise SATA SSD storage across eight 1.92TB drives.

Ready-to-deploy kit

A rail kit is included for immediate rack mounting. Redundant hot-swappable power supplies let you replace a faulty unit without downtime. The PERC H730 RAID controller with 2GB non-volatile cache manages the eight drive bays. Broadcom BCM5720 quad-port 1GbE networking and iDRAC9 Express remote management are integrated. Memory modules and drives are packaged separately and require installation before use.

Pre-install checks

Verify your rack has 1U space and compatible square-hole or threaded rails for the included kit. Confirm facility power can feed dual redundant supplies. Plan time and staffing to install 16 memory DIMMs and eight 2.5-inch drives before commissioning. Ensure your management network can reach the iDRAC9 Express port for out-of-band control.

Questions about this item

Will the 16 DDR4 3200MHz memory modules or the 8 hot-swap 1.92TB SATA SSDs need scheduled replacement?

The 512GB DDR4 memory has no moving parts and is not a wear item. The 15.36TB of Enterprise SATA SSDs have a finite write endurance; plan to monitor SMART health and replace drives as they approach their rated TBW.

What limit appears first when the dual Xeon Gold 6148 20-core processors run sustained workloads in this 1U rack server?

The 1U chassis and redundant power supplies constrain total thermal headroom, so CPU turbo up to 3.70 GHz will throttle before memory bandwidth or the PERC H730 12Gb/s RAID controller saturates.

How loud and hot does the PowerEdge R640 get with dual power supplies and eight SSDs running all day?

High-speed 1U fans needed to cool two 20-core Xeons and the PERC H730 controller produce significant airflow noise; the redundant power supplies add heat but allow hot-swap replacement without shutdown.
