Dense compute platform

The Dell PowerEdge R640 fits two Xeon Gold 6126 processors and 256 GB of DDR4 ECC registered memory into a 1U rack chassis that accepts up to four 3.5-inch drives. It targets virtualisation hosts, database nodes and high-density clusters that need maximum core count per rack unit.

Dual 750 W supplies and iDRAC9

Redundant 750 W power supplies share the load while the integrated Dell Remote Access Controller 9 Enterprise licence provides out-of-band monitoring and firmware updates without a local console. The PERC H740P RAID controller manages drive arrays with hardware acceleration, keeping CPU cycles free for workloads.

Flexible storage and networking foundation

No drives are installed, so buyers choose capacity and media type to match the application. A dual-port 10 GbE 562T adapter is fitted for high-throughput east-west traffic, and rail kits are available on request for rapid rack deployment.

Questions about this item

How do I install the PERC H740P RAID controller and what step is often missed?

The PERC H740P RAID controller comes pre-installed; the step often missed is creating a virtual disk in the controller BIOS before installing the operating system.

What maintenance will the 2x 750W power supplies need later?

The 2x 750W power supplies are hot-plug redundant; maintenance typically involves replacing a failed unit without shutting down the server.

What limit appears first on the 2x Xeon Gold 6126 CPUs under sustained load?

The 2x Xeon Gold 6126 CPUs at 2.6GHz with 12 cores each will hit thermal limits first under sustained heavy workloads.
