Dell PowerEdge R640 8B Virtualization Server

This Dell PowerEdge R640 8B rack server ships new with two Intel Xeon Gold 6136 processors delivering 24 cores and 48 threads at 3.00GHz. It includes 256GB of DDR4 ECC Registered memory and eight 1.2TB 10K SAS drives managed by a PERC H740P controller. The 1U chassis targets virtualization, database, and high-speed transactional workloads in dense rack environments.

Dual 10GbE and 1GbE Networking Limits

Networking combines dual 10GbE X540 ports with dual 1GbE I350 ports for mixed-speed connectivity. The 10GbE links handle heavy east-west traffic between virtual machines or storage nodes. The 1GbE links serve management or lighter client access. Throughput is bounded by the physical port speeds and the switch infrastructure they connect to.

Hot-Swap Bays and Rack Density

Eight 2.5-inch hot-swap bays are fully populated with the 1.2TB SAS drives, allowing drive replacement without downtime. Front-panel LEDs show power, Ethernet, and USB status for quick visual checks. The compact 1U form factor fits standard racks while maximizing compute density per rack unit. Integrated graphics handles basic console output without a discrete GPU.
