Built for business workloads

The Dell PowerEdge R640 is a 36-core rack server designed for file storage, virtualization, databases, backups, and application hosting. Two Intel Xeon Gold 6154 processors running at 3.0GHz deliver dependable performance for business applications and data workloads. 512GB of DDR4 memory supports multiple services and virtual machines.

Suits high-density compute needs

This server fits buyers who need maximum processor density in a compact form factor with eight 2.5-inch drive bays. It is not for buyers who need more than two processors, GPU acceleration, or a different drive interface than SAS. The integrated graphics and fixed two-processor limit define its role.

H730P controller manages eight SAS drives

The included H730P storage controller simplifies setup and day-to-day management of the eight 600GB 10K SAS hard drives. This combination provides storage capacity for operating systems, applications, virtual machines, and business data with hardware RAID support.

Questions about this item

How loud and hot does the PowerEdge R640 get when both Xeon Gold 6154 CPUs run at 3.0GHz all day?

The dual 14-core Xeon Gold 6154 processors draw significant power under sustained load, so the 1U chassis relies on high-speed fans that produce noticeable noise and exhaust heat into the rack aisle.

Which rails, cables and management modules must I already have to install this 8-bay SFF server in a standard rack?

You need compatible sliding rails for a 1U Dell rack server, SAS data cables for the eight 2.5-inch drive bays, and an iDRAC Enterprise licence if you want remote console and virtual media features.

Will the H730P controller and 600GB 10K SAS drives work with older 6Gb SAS backplanes I already own?

Yes, the H730P supports 6Gb SAS speeds and the supplied 600GB 10K drives negotiate down to 6Gb, so they operate correctly on legacy backplanes without firmware changes.
