DELL PowerEdge R640 48-core server

The DELL PowerEdge R640 is a 1U rack server built for business workloads such as virtualization, databases, file storage and application hosting. Two Intel Xeon Platinum 8268 processors deliver 48 cores at 2.90 GHz, and 128 GB of DDR4 memory supports multiple services and virtual machines. Eight 2.5-inch bays hold 600 GB 10K SAS drives managed by an H730P controller.

Suited for virtualisation and data workloads

This configuration suits organisations that need dense compute and local SAS storage for virtual machines, databases or backup targets. The integrated graphics and lack of GPU expansion slots make it unsuitable for buyers who require GPU acceleration. The two-processor limit means buyers who need more than two sockets must evaluate other platforms.

48 cores from dual Xeon Platinum 8268

The decisive specification is the 48 cores supplied by the dual Xeon Platinum 8268 CPUs, which set the throughput ceiling for virtualisation and database tasks. Memory can grow to 3 TB of DDR4, and the eight drive bays are limited to SAS devices. Buyers should verify that their workload fits within these core, memory and storage constraints.
