Built for virtualisation and database workloads

The Dell PowerEdge R640 packs two Intel Xeon Platinum 8268 processors running at 2.9GHz with 48 total cores and 512GB of DDR4 memory. Eight new 1TB SATA SSDs sit behind an H730P controller, giving you a ready-to-run platform for file storage, virtual machines and business applications in a 2.5-inch drive form factor. This new system targets IT teams that need dense compute and storage in a single rackmount chassis.

Storage and memory limits to plan for

The H730P controller manages eight SATA SSDs, so the drive count is fixed at eight 2.5-inch bays and cannot be expanded beyond that without additional hardware. DDR4 memory tops out at 3TB across the system, so the installed 512GB leaves headroom but requires compatible registered DIMMs for any future upgrade. The LGA3647 socket and dual-processor maximum of two CPUs define the hard ceiling for processor scaling on this platform.

Check your rack, power and OS requirements

Verify that your rack can accommodate the 60kg weight and that your power distribution units deliver the correct connectors for dual redundant supplies. No operating system ships with the server, so licences and installation media for your chosen hypervisor or OS must be prepared in advance. Ensure your network infrastructure has compatible Ethernet ports for the onboard X710 interfaces before deployment.

Questions about this item

Should I choose the 8-bay 2.5-inch model or a different bay count for this R640?

The 8-bay SFF chassis fits eight 2.5-inch drives; the installed set uses eight 1 TB SATA SSDs. If you need more raw bays you would need a different chassis, while fewer bays would reduce the maximum drive count.

What does the 48-core total mean for actual virtualization density on this server?

Two Xeon Platinum 8268 CPUs give 48 cores at 2.9 GHz, so each core can host multiple vCPUs; typical hypervisors run dozens of VMs on this core count before CPU scheduling becomes the bottleneck.

How does the SATA interface limit the eight SSDs when paired with the H730P controller?

Each SSD runs over a 6 Gb/s SATA link, so individual drive throughput is bounded by that link; the H730P manages RAID across all eight drives but cannot make a single SATA SSD exceed the interface speed.
