Dell PowerEdge R640 8-Bay Virtualisation Server

The Dell PowerEdge R640 is a 1U rackmount server system configured with two Intel Xeon Platinum 8268 processors running at 2.90GHz. It delivers 48 total cores and 512GB of DDR4 memory to handle virtualisation, databases, file storage and application hosting workloads in business environments.

Suited for dense virtualisation and data workloads

This server suits organisations that need high core density and large memory capacity in a compact rack form factor with flexible 2.5-inch drive bays. Buyers requiring a tower chassis, dedicated GPU compute, or more than two processor sockets should consider alternative platforms designed for those requirements.

48 cores and 512GB DDR4 drive consolidation capacity

The dual Platinum 8268 CPUs provide 48 cores at 2.90GHz with a maximum memory ceiling of 3TB DDR4. Eight 2.5-inch bays and an integrated H730P controller let you configure the storage mix that matches your performance and capacity targets.

Questions about this item

Should I choose the 8-bay 2.5-inch chassis or a different bay count for this R640?

The R640 8B SFF chassis provides eight 2.5-inch drive bays, which matches the included H730P controller and the listed configuration; other bay counts are not described in this listing.

What does the 48-core total mean for actual workloads on this server?

Two Xeon Platinum 8268 CPUs each bring 24 cores at 2.90GHz, giving 48 cores total to run multiple virtual machines, databases or container workloads simultaneously.

How does the H730P controller limit the storage setup in practice?

The H730P RAID controller manages the eight 2.5-inch bays and supports the RAID levels available on that controller; drive types and capacities are not included, so you select them to fit the controller.
