Dell PowerEdge R640 48-core virtualization server

This 1U rackmount system combines two Intel Xeon Platinum 8268 processors at 2.9 GHz for 48 total cores with 512 GB of DDR4 memory. It targets businesses running virtualization platforms, database clusters, backup targets or application hosting workloads.

Verify rack depth, power feed and SAS cabling

The chassis accepts eight 2.5-inch SAS drives and ships with an H730P controller plus an X710 network adapter. Confirm your cabinet can supply the required voltage and that you have compatible SAS backplane cables before ordering.

Dual 24-core CPUs draw significant power under load

With both Platinum 8268 processors active, expect high thermal output that demands adequate front-to-rear airflow in the rack. The integrated GPU adds minimal heat, while the eight 1.2 TB 10K SAS drives contribute steady vibration and acoustic noise during sustained I/O.

Questions about this item

Does the PowerEdge R640 come with all eight drive bays populated, or do I need to buy extra drives?

The server includes eight 1.2 TB SAS hard drives already installed in the 2.5-inch bays, so no additional drives are required for the base configuration.

Should I choose the 512 GB DDR4 configuration or add more memory for heavy virtualization?

512 GB DDR4 supports many virtual machines, but the chassis accepts up to 3 TB; add modules if your workloads demand more capacity.

What does the 48-core figure mean for actual VM density on this R640?

Two Xeon Platinum 8268 CPUs give 48 cores at 2.9 GHz, allowing high VM counts limited mainly by the 512 GB RAM and storage IOPS.
