Compact 1U rack server for dense compute

The Dell PowerEdge R650xs fits two Intel Xeon Gold 5317 processors at 3.0 GHz with 12 cores each into a single rack unit. It ships with 512 GB of DDR4 2933 MHz registered ECC memory across sixteen DIMM slots. The configuration targets virtualization, cloud infrastructure and data-intensive workloads that need high core density in minimal space.

Memory ceiling and storage interface limits

DDR4 capacity tops out at 1 TB, so the installed 512 GB leaves headroom for growth within the same generation. The PERC H745 controller manages eight 2.5-inch SAS drives at 12 Gb/s and supports RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 with 4 GB of battery-backed cache. NVMe and SATA drives are not included in this build.

Dual 1400 W platinum supplies and front-access bays

Hot-swap redundant power supplies maintain uptime during module replacement. Eight front-mounted drive bays allow disk changes without sliding the chassis out of the rack. Included rails and bezel simplify installation. The Broadcom 57412 dual-port 10 GbE SFP+ OCP 3.0 card handles network connectivity, while iDRAC9 Enterprise provides dedicated remote management.

Questions about this item

Should I pick the 512 GB DDR4 configuration or add more memory later?

The server ships with 512 GB using sixteen 32 GB DDR4 2933 MHz modules and supports up to 1 TB across 16 slots, so you can expand later if workloads grow.

What does the 3.0 GHz base clock with 3.6 GHz turbo mean for actual throughput?

Each Xeon Gold 5317 runs at 3.0 GHz base and can boost to 3.6 GHz, giving 12 cores per processor strong single-thread speed and high multi-thread capacity for virtualization or databases.

How does the SAS 12 Gb/s interface limit the eight 1.8 TB drives?

The PERC H745 connects the 2.5" SAS drives at 12 Gb/s, capping each drive at that link speed while supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 for redundancy or performance.
