Compact 1U density for virtualised workloads

The Dell PowerEdge R650xs fits two Intel Xeon Gold 6338 processors and 128GB of DDR4 3200MHz registered ECC memory into a single rack unit. Eight 960GB SATA SSDs provide fast read performance for mixed workloads. This configuration targets teams running dense virtualisation, cloud infrastructure or high-performance computing where floor space is limited.

PERC H745 with NV cache and 10GbE SFP+

The front-mounted PERC H745 RAID controller adds 4GB of non-volatile cache backed by a battery, enabling RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 without data loss on power failure. A Broadcom 57412 dual-port 10GbE SFP+ OCP 3.0 card ships installed, giving immediate high-speed connectivity. iDRAC9 Enterprise provides full out-of-band management and lifecycle automation from day one.

SATA SSD throughput ceiling

Eight SATA 6Gb/s drives saturate the bus well before the controller reaches its peak IOPS, so write-heavy workloads will hit a throughput ceiling. The server supports a maximum of two processors; this unit already has both sockets populated, so no further CPU expansion is possible. Memory can grow to 1TB across 16 DIMM slots, but only DDR4 modules are compatible.

Questions about this item

What maintenance or replacement will the PERC H745 RAID controller battery need?

The PERC H745 includes a 4GB NV cache with a battery that protects cached writes during power loss; plan to replace the battery module per Dell's recommended service interval to maintain RAID performance.

Which limit appears first under sustained load with dual Xeon Gold 6338 CPUs and 1400 W PSUs?

The 1400 W platinum power supplies set the power envelope; sustained all-core turbo at 3.2 GHz across 32 cores per socket will hit the PSU or thermal limit before memory or storage bottlenecks.

How do noise, heat and power draw behave when the server runs all day with eight 960 GB SATA SSDs?

Dual 1400 W PSUs and front-to-back airflow keep components cool; fan speed ramps with CPU and SSD temperature, so acoustic output rises under continuous 10 GbE and RAID workloads.
