This new Dell PowerEdge R730 is a 2U rack server fitted with two Intel Xeon E5-2660 v3 processors. Each CPU runs at 2.6 GHz with 10 cores and a 3.3 GHz turbo frequency. The system includes 128 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across eight 16 GB modules. Storage is handled by a PERC H730 controller with 1 GB cache driving eight 800 GB SATA SSDs. Dual 750 W platinum power supplies provide redundancy.

Suits virtualisation and database nodes.

The server targets midsize to large enterprises running virtual desktop infrastructure, databases, data warehousing or high-performance computing data nodes. Quad-port networking with two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ ports plus iDRAC 8 Enterprise management supports dense virtualisation. The 2.5-inch drive bays and lack of PCIe GPU clearance make it unsuitable for workloads that require graphics acceleration or additional add-in cards. This controller determines the storage performance and data-protection options available for the eight installed 800 GB SSDs and any future drives added to the chassis.
