Dual Xeon E5-2680 v3 Server

The Dell PowerEdge R730 is a 2U rack server built for midsize and large enterprise workloads. Dual Intel Xeon E5-2680 v3 processors provide 24 cores at 2.5 GHz with 3.3 GHz turbo frequency. The system ships with 128 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across eight 16 GB modules. Eight 800 GB SATA SSDs and a PERC H730 controller deliver high-speed storage in an eight-bay 2.5-inch chassis.

SATA SSD and SAS controller limits

The PERC H730 controller supports SAS and SATA drives with RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode. SATA 6 Gb/s SSDs saturate the link at queue depths common in database and virtualisation workloads. The 12 Gb/s SAS backplane does not accelerate SATA devices beyond their native 6 Gb/s rate. Network connectivity uses a quad-port daughter card with two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ interfaces.

1.5 TB maximum memory capacity

Twenty-four DDR4 DIMM slots allow expansion up to 1.5 TB of registered ECC memory. The installed 128 GB configuration leaves sixteen slots free for future growth. Buyers who need more than 1.5 TB of system memory must choose a different platform. The LGA 2011-3 socket and Intel C610 chipset restrict processor upgrades to the same Xeon E5 v3 and v4 families.

Questions about this item

Should I pick the 2.5 GHz 12-core Xeon E5-2680 v3 or a different CPU option for this R730?

This unit ships with two Xeon E5-2680 v3 processors, each running at 2.5 GHz with 12 cores and a 3.3 GHz turbo frequency. Both sockets are populated, so no further CPU choice is needed.

What does 128 GB of DDR4 actually deliver in this server?

The system includes 128 GB of DDR4 2133 MHz registered ECC memory across eight 16 GB modules, leaving 16 of the 24 slots free for expansion up to 1.5 TB total capacity.

How does the PERC H730 controller limit the eight 800 GB SATA SSDs?

The PERC H730 1 GB controller provides 12 Gb/s SAS/SATA connectivity with battery-backed cache and supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60, so the SATA 6 Gb/s SSDs run at their native interface speed.
