Rack server for virtualisation workloads

The Dell PowerEdge R730 is a 2U rack server built around a single Intel Xeon E5-2650 v3 processor with ten cores running at 2.3 GHz. It ships with 64 GB of DDR4 memory installed across 24 DIMM slots, leaving room for expansion up to the platform maximum. The system includes a PERC H330 RAID controller and two 1 TB 7.2K SATA drives in hot-plug bays. Redundant 750 W power supplies and a DVD-ROM complete the baseline configuration.

Build quality and daily connectivity

The chassis supports up to eight 2.5-inch hot-plug SAS or SATA drives, allowing drive swaps without downtime. A daughter card provides four 1 GbE network ports, with optional 10 GbE upgrades available. Up to seven PCIe 3.0 slots plus a dedicated PERC slot accommodate additional controllers or accelerators. Remote management is handled by iDRAC8 with Lifecycle Controller, offering out-of-band access for firmware updates and hardware monitoring.

Compatibility checks before ordering

Verify that your rack provides 2U of vertical space and sufficient depth for the 26.8-inch chassis length. Confirm the facility can supply redundant power circuits for the dual 750 W units. Ensure any additional memory modules are DDR4 registered DIMMs compatible with the 2400 MT/s specification and the installed processor's memory controller. Plan storage expansion within the eight-bay limit and the H330 controller's supported RAID levels.

Questions about this item

What SATA speed does the PERC H330 controller support, and what practical throughput does that cap the 1 TB drives at?

The PERC H330 is a 12 Gbps controller, but the installed 1 TB drives are 6 Gbps SATA, so each drive is limited to the 6 Gbps SATA link.

What rack depth and rail clearance does the 2U chassis require for a standard four-post cabinet?

The server is 26.8 inches long, 17.44 inches wide and 3.4 inches high; allow at least 28–30 inches of usable rail depth for cable bend radius and airflow.

How do I install a second Xeon E5-2650 v3, and which step is most often missed?

Install the second CPU in the socket 2 slot, populate its 12 DIMM slots with matched DDR4 modules, then enable the second processor in the BIOS — the BIOS step is the one most often forgotten.
