Dense storage server for virtualisation

The Dell PowerEdge R730xd packs 24 small-form-factor bays into a 2U rack chassis, giving you high drive density for databases or software-defined storage. Two Xeon E5-2603 v3 processors at 1.6 GHz and 768 GB of DDR4 ECC memory provide a balanced platform for memory-heavy workloads. The PERC H730 SAS controller manages RAID across SATA drives, while iDRAC8 Enterprise enables full remote administration.

Sustained throughput with dual 1100 W supplies

Under continuous load the twin 1100 W power supplies share current, keeping voltage rails stable when all 24 drives and both CPUs run at capacity. The 10 GbE and 1 GbE network ports maintain wire-speed traffic for replication or backup streams without saturating the bus. Integrated graphics and the iDRAC8 dedicated port stay responsive even during extended firmware updates or RAID rebuilds.

Slide-in rails and tool-less drive carriers

The server ships with a rail kit that mounts in standard square-hole racks; the chassis then slides in and locks with thumb screws, so one person can install it in minutes. Drive carriers are tool-less — squeeze the latch, insert a 2.5" SATA drive, and the backplane connects power and SAS automatically. The only common snag is forgetting to seat the carrier fully, which leaves the drive invisible to the PERC H730 until re-inserted.

Questions about this item

How much power do the two 1100W supplies draw when the R730xd runs 24/7 with both Xeon E5-2603 v3 CPUs at load?

Each supply is rated at 1100W; actual draw depends on the drives and add-in cards you install, so the system will only consume what the configured workload demands.

Which drive trays and caddies must I already have to populate the 24 SFF bays in this 2.5-inch chassis?

The 24-bay front panel accepts standard Dell 2.5-inch hot-plug caddies; you will need one caddy per SATA or SAS drive you intend to install.

Will the PERC H730 RAID controller recognise older SATA SSDs I want to reuse from a previous server?

The H730 supports SATA and SAS protocols, so legacy SATA SSDs will be detected and can be configured in any RAID level the controller offers.
