2U rack server with 24 2.5-inch bays, dual Xeon E5-2640 v3 8-core CPUs, 128GB DDR4, PERC H730 controller and two 800GB SSDs
The Dell PowerEdge R730xd is a 2U rack server with twenty-four 2.5-inch drive bays. It targets midsize and large enterprises running data warehouses, e-commerce platforms, virtual desktop infrastructure or high-performance computing data nodes. Two Xeon E5-2640 v3 processors and 128GB of DDR4 ECC memory provide the compute base for these workloads.
The decisive specification is the pair of Intel Xeon E5-2640 v3 CPUs, each running at 2.6GHz with eight cores and a 3.4GHz turbo frequency. Together they deliver sixteen cores and thirty-two threads on the LGA 2011-3 platform with the C610 chipset. Buyers who need more cores per socket or a newer instruction set cannot use this system.
Eight 16GB DDR4 2133MHz registered ECC modules populate eight of the twenty-four DIMM slots, leaving sixteen slots free for expansion up to the 1.5TB limit. The PERC H730 controller with 1GB cache manages the two installed 800GB SATA SSDs and up to twenty-two additional SATA or SAS drives in RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 or 60. Storage capacity scales with drive count; the controller and bay count set the ceiling.

Other versions of this model
The dual Xeon E5-2640 v3 processors run at 2.6 GHz base and can reach 3.4 GHz turbo, giving sixteen total cores for multi-threaded applications such as virtualization and databases.
The H730 controller supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 with a 1 GB cache, capping each bay at SATA 6 Gb/s or SAS 12 Gb/s depending on the drive installed.
The 2U form factor fits standard racks; the included ready rails support tool-less mounting in square-hole or round-hole cabinets with adjustable depth.
