Dell PowerEdge R730xd 2U Server

The Dell PowerEdge R730xd is a 2U rack server built for dense storage workloads. It ships with two Intel Xeon E5-2640 v3 8-core processors running at 2.60 GHz and 256 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across eight 32 GB modules.

Suited for storage-heavy virtualization

This configuration fits teams running virtual desktop infrastructure, data warehouses, or HPC data nodes that need local flash capacity. Buyers who need more than 24 drive bays or a different network interface should look at other platforms.

24 x 800 GB SATA SSDs on a PERC H730 controller

The server includes twenty-four 800 GB SATA solid-state drives managed by a Dell PERC H730 1 GB controller supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, 60 and pass-through. This drive count and controller pairing defines the usable capacity and redundancy options.

Questions about this item

Will the 2.5-inch SATA SSDs in this R730xd share backplane bandwidth with older 3.5-inch SAS drives I might add later?

The 24-bay 2.5-inch backplane is wired for SATA and 12 Gb/s SAS through the H730 controller, so any 3.5-inch drive would need a 2.5-to-3.5 adapter and would share the same SAS lanes.

How do I confirm the PERC H730 sees all 24 SSDs and the battery-backed cache is healthy after first boot?

Open the H730 BIOS utility (Ctrl-R) or iDRAC8 storage view; the controller should list 24 physical disks at 6 Gb/s and show the 1 GB cache with battery status "Optimal".

Does the box include SFP+ transceivers for the X520 10 GbE ports, or must I buy them separately?

The server ships with the X520/I350 daughter card installed but without SFP+ modules; compatible 10 GbE SFP+ transceivers and cables are a separate purchase.
