A 2U rack server with twelve 3.5-inch hot-plug bays, dual ten-core Xeon processors at 2.3GHz, 16GB DDR4 memory and a Perc H730 RAID controller
HDD None
The Dell PowerEdge R730XD is a 2U rack server with twelve 3.5-inch hot-plug drive bays, built for storage-dense workloads. Dual Intel Xeon E5-2650 v3 processors deliver twenty cores and forty threads at 2.3 GHz, while the Perc H730 RAID controller supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 across SAS or SATA drives. Redundant 750 W power supplies and iDRAC8 remote management complete the platform.
This chassis suits teams that need high raw capacity in a compact rack footprint, such as backup targets, media archives or software-defined storage nodes. The four 1 GbE ports handle moderate network throughput, and six PCIe 3.0 slots allow additional NICs or HBAs. Buyers who require more than twelve drive bays, faster memory speeds than 2400 MT/s or a newer processor architecture should evaluate alternative platforms.
The twelve 3.5-inch hot-plug bays set the maximum internal storage at 52 TB when populated with the largest supported drives. If the workload demands more bays or a different form factor, this server will not meet the requirement.

Other versions of this model
The server measures 26.8 inches long, 17.44 inches wide and 3.4 inches high; a standard four-post rack with at least 26.8 inches of usable depth and a compatible Dell rail kit will secure it.
Both CPUs and the H730 controller are already factory-installed; the common oversight is forgetting to seat the 24 DIMMs evenly across the 12 slots per processor for balanced memory channels.
The 12 hot-plug 3.5-inch SAS or SATA drive bays accept drives that will eventually wear out; the two 750 W redundant power supplies and the DVD-ROM drive are the other field-replaceable units.
