2U rack server for dense storage

The Dell PowerEdge R730XD fits twelve 3.5-inch hot-plug bays in a two-unit rack height. Dual Xeon E5-2609 v3 six-core processors at 1.9 GHz and 64 GB of DDR4 memory provide a balanced platform for archive, backup or virtualisation workloads that prioritise capacity over raw compute density.

Build integration: power.

Two 750 W redundant hot-swap power supplies keep the system running during a module failure. Six PCIe 3.0 slots plus a dedicated RAID card slot leave room for additional network or storage controllers. The H330 controller manages up to twelve SATA or SAS drives with RAID 0, 1, 5, 10, 50 or 60, freeing the CPU from parity calculations.

Thermals, noise and power draw in normal use

Redundant power supplies and hot-plug drive carriers are designed for continuous operation in a cooled rack aisle. Fan speed scales with inlet temperature and component load, so idle noise remains at typical data-centre background levels. The 2U form factor allows unrestricted airflow across both processors and the full drive bay population.

Questions about this item

How much DDR4 memory can the R730XD take before the 24 DIMM slots are full?

The board has 24 DIMM slots, 12 per processor, and the installed CPUs support up to 1536 GB of DDR4 at 2400 MT/s.

What fan noise and heat output should I expect from the dual 750 W redundant supplies running 24/7?

Two hot-swap 750 W supplies share the load; the 2U chassis uses multiple system fans that ramp with CPU and drive temperature, so sustained noise and heat scale with actual workload.

Which operating system and rail kit must I supply to get the server running in a rack?

No operating system is included, and the 2U chassis requires a compatible rack-mount rail kit that is not part of this configuration.
