2U rack server for dense storage

The Dell PowerEdge R730XD fits twelve 3.5-inch hot-plug drives in a 2U chassis. Two Xeon E5-2609 v3 six-core processors at 1.9 GHz and 16 GB of DDR4 memory handle database or virtualisation workloads. A Perc H730 RAID controller with 1 GB cache manages the three included 600 GB 15 K SAS drives. Redundant 750 W power supplies keep the system running if one unit fails.

Thermals and power in normal use

Redundant hot-swap power supplies share the load so each unit runs well below its 750 W rating during typical operation. The 2U form factor allows front-to-rear airflow across the drive bays and CPU heatsinks without extreme fan speeds. Idle power draw stays modest because the six-core CPUs have a low base frequency and the SAS drives spin at a constant 15 K rpm.

Behaviour under sustained load

Under continuous database or virtualisation load the six-core processors maintain their 1.9 GHz base clock without thermal throttling. The H730 controller sustains mixed RAID 0/1/5/6/10/50/60 throughput across all twelve drive bays. Fan speeds ramp gradually to keep inlet temperatures within specification while the redundant power supplies continue to share current evenly.

Questions about this item

How do I install the 3.5-inch SAS drives into the 12 hot-plug bays and what step is often missed?

Slide each drive into a bay until the latch clicks; the step often missed is confirming the H730 controller detects every drive in the RAID BIOS before loading the OS.

Which components will need replacement first during long-term operation?

The three 600 GB 15K SAS drives and the two 750 W redundant power supplies are the moving parts most likely to require replacement.

What limit appears first when the server runs sustained workloads?

The installed 16 GB DDR4 memory across 24 DIMM slots caps capacity at 16 GB, so memory exhaustion is the first bottleneck under heavy sustained use.
