Dell PowerEdge R730xd 2U server

This 2U rack server delivers dense storage and compute in a single chassis. Dual Intel Xeon E5-2660 v3 processors provide 20 cores at 2.6 GHz with 3.3 GHz turbo for multi-threaded workloads. The 512 GB DDR4 ECC memory supports virtualisation and database tasks. Twenty-four drive bays come populated with 400 GB SATA SSDs managed by a PERC H730 controller.

Suited for storage-heavy applications

The 24-bay front panel and hardware RAID make this system a natural fit for data warehouses, VDI storage nodes and HPC data tiers. Quad-port networking with two 10 Gb SFP+ and two 1 GbE ports handles east-west traffic. Buyers who need more than 1.5 TB of RAM or more than two sockets should look at larger platforms. Organisations requiring PCIe 4.0 or newer instruction-set extensions will not find them here.

24-bay 2.5-inch chassis with SATA SSDs

The defining specification is the 24-bay 2.5-inch chassis filled with 400 GB SATA SSDs on a PERC H730 RAID controller. This combination fixes the storage protocol at SATA and the drive count at 24, which determines capacity ceiling and IOPS profile. Confirm that your workload fits a SATA-only array before purchasing.

Questions about this item

How much power do the two 750 W platinum supplies draw under sustained load?

Each supply is rated at 750 W platinum efficiency; total draw depends on workload but the redundant pair supports the dual 10-core Xeons, 512 GB DDR4 and 24 SSDs within that envelope.

What caddies or rails are needed to install the 24 SSDs in the 2.5" bays?

The chassis includes 24 hot-swap 2.5" drive bays and ready rails; the 400 GB SATA SSDs ship already mounted in Dell caddies so no extra parts are required.

Will the PERC H730 controller recognise older 6 Gb/s SATA drives if I add them later?

The H730 1 GB controller supports SAS and SATA at 12 Gb/s and 6 Gb/s, so legacy 6 Gb/s SATA drives will be detected and can be mixed with the installed 400 GB SSDs in RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 or 60.
