PowerEdge R740 2U Server

The Dell PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rack server built for demanding enterprise workloads. It ships with two Intel Xeon Platinum 8160 processors, each offering 24 cores at 2.1 GHz with 3.7 GHz turbo. The system includes 512 GB of DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC memory across 16 modules. Eight 2.4 TB 10K SAS drives and a PERC H730P controller provide high-capacity storage.

Installation and common issues

The unit arrives with ready rails and a front bezel for standard rack mounting. Redundant 750 W platinum power supplies are hot-swappable for easy maintenance. The iDRAC 9 Enterprise module enables remote deployment and monitoring without physical access. Builders should verify rack depth and airflow clearance before installation, as the 2U chassis requires adequate space for cable routing and cooling.

Sustained load behaviour

Dual Xeon Platinum 8160 CPUs deliver consistent multi-threaded performance for virtualisation and database tasks. The 512 GB DDR4 ECC memory supports large working sets without paging. Eight 10K SAS drives in RAID configurations maintain steady throughput under continuous I/O. Redundant platinum power supplies and the Intel C620 chipset ensure stable operation during extended production runs.

Questions about this item

How can I verify the dual Xeon Platinum 8160 processors and 512GB DDR4 memory are detected correctly after installation?

During POST the BIOS will display two 24-core Xeon Platinum 8160 CPUs at 2.1GHz and 512GB of DDR4 2666MHz registered ECC memory across the 24 DIMM slots; iDRAC9 Enterprise also reports the same inventory remotely.

What components are included with the server and what must be purchased separately?

The chassis ships with 2x Xeon Platinum 8160 CPUs, 16x 32GB DDR4 DIMMs, PERC H730P 2GB controller with battery, 8x 2.4TB 10K SAS 2.5" drives, Intel X520/I350 quad-port network card, iDRAC9 Enterprise, 2x 750W redundant PSUs, rails and bezel; no additional parts are required for basic operation.

Which drive capacity and RAID configuration does this specific build support out of the box?

Eight 2.4TB 10K SAS drives are installed and the PERC H730P 2GB controller supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60, so you can choose any of those levels immediately without extra hardware.
