Dell PowerEdge R740 2U Server

The Dell PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rack server built around two Intel Gold 6126 processors. Each CPU delivers 12 cores at 2.6 GHz with 19.25 MB cache. The system ships with 128 GB of DDR4 memory arranged as eight 16 GB modules running at 2666 MT/s. Four 480 GB SATA SSDs are installed and managed by a PERC H730P RAID controller. Remote management is handled by iDRAC9 Enterprise.

Suits virtualisation hosts and database nodes

This configuration suits virtualisation hosts and database nodes that need high core counts and redundant 1100 W power supplies. The chassis provides eight 2.5 inch drive bays, so four bays remain open for expansion. Dual 10 GbE and dual 1 GbE ports are integrated on the network daughter card. Up to eight PCIe Gen 3 slots are available for additional adapters. Buyers who require more than eight drive bays or a different processor specification should evaluate alternative chassis.

H730P RAID controller with eight 2.5 inch bays

The H730P RAID controller manages the four installed 480 GB SATA SSDs and supports the remaining four 2.5 inch bays for future storage growth. This controller choice determines the RAID levels and drive types that can be added without replacing the storage adapter.

Questions about this item

How do I verify the server is working as intended after setup?

Log into iDRAC9 Enterprise and confirm both Gold 6126 CPUs show 12 cores at 2.6GHz, all 8 memory modules report 16GB DDR4 at 2666 MT/s, and the H730P controller sees the 4x 480GB SATA SSDs in a healthy RAID array.

What is included in the box and what must be purchased separately?

The shipment includes the R740 2U chassis with bezel, sliding rails, two 1100W redundant power supplies, both CPUs, all 128GB of DDR4 memory, four 480GB SATA SSDs, and power cords; additional 2.5-inch drives or PCIe cards are not supplied.

Which version or capacity should I choose for this configuration?

This specific unit is the R740 with 8x 2.5-inch drive bays, dual Gold 6126 12-core processors, 128GB DDR4, four 480GB SATA SSDs, H730P RAID controller, Intel X550 10Gb/1Gb networking, and iDRAC9 Enterprise — no other variants are offered in this listing.
