Dual-Socket Xeon Rack Server

The Dell PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rack server built for compute-intensive workloads. Two Intel Xeon Gold 6130 processors deliver 32 total cores at 2.1 GHz with 3.7 GHz turbo capability. The system ships with 256 GB of DDR4-2666 registered ECC memory across eight 32 GB modules. A PERC H730P controller manages SAS and SATA storage with 2 GB cache.

Suited For Virtualisation And Database Clusters

Organisations running hypervisor clusters, in-memory databases or multi-threaded analytics will benefit from the dual-socket layout and 24 DIMM slots supporting up to 3 TB. The quad-port network daughter card provides two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ links. Buyers who require single-socket density or GPU-accelerated inference should evaluate alternative configurations.

24 DDR4 Slots Define Memory Scaling

The 24 memory slots are the decisive specification for capacity planning. With eight slots populated at 32 GB each, 16 slots remain open for future expansion toward the 3 TB maximum. This headroom determines whether the platform can grow with workload demand without replacing the chassis.

Questions about this item

How do I install the 256GB DDR4 memory kit into the 24 DIMM slots and what is the common mistake?

Populate all eight channels evenly across both CPUs using the 8x 32GB registered ECC modules; the frequent error is filling slots on only one processor, which leaves the second CPU without memory and prevents boot.

Which components will need replacement first during long-term operation?

The two 300GB 10K SAS drives and the PERC H730P controller battery are the primary wear items; the redundant 750W platinum power supplies and hot-swap fans are also field-replaceable when they reach end of life.

What thermal or power limit appears first under sustained full-load?

Dual 16-core Xeon Gold 6130 CPUs at 2.1GHz with 3.7GHz turbo draw up to the 750W PSU rating; prolonged turbo across all 32 cores can hit the power supply ceiling before the cooling capacity is exceeded.
