Dual-socket Xeon server for virtualization workloads

The PowerEdge R740 fits two Intel Xeon Gold 6134 processors, each with 8 cores running at 3.2 GHz and a 3.7 GHz turbo frequency. 256 GB of DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC memory is installed across 24 slots, supporting up to 3 TB total capacity. The 2U rack chassis provides eight 2.5-inch drive bays for dense storage configurations.

Redundant platinum power supplies

Dual 750 W platinum-efficiency power supplies deliver hot-swap redundancy for continuous operation. The iDRAC 9 Enterprise controller enables remote thermal monitoring and power management without host OS dependency. System fans adjust speed based on real-time sensor data from both CPU sockets and memory channels.

PERC H730P RAID controller with battery-backed cache

The H730P 2 GB controller supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode for software-defined storage. Battery-backed cache preserves write data during unexpected power loss. Two 400 GB SATA SSDs ship pre-installed, and the quad-port network daughter card adds two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ connections. Ready Rails and front bezel are included for immediate rack mounting.

Questions about this item

How do I install the Xeon Gold 6134 processors into the LGA 3647 sockets, and which step is most often missed?

Align the processor notches with the socket keys, lower the carrier gently, and torque the four captive screws in a cross pattern to the specified value; the step most often missed is the cross-pattern torque sequence, which prevents uneven pressure on the 3647-pin interface.

What maintenance or replacement will the H730P 2GB controller battery need later?

The PERC H730P includes a 2GB cache backed by a battery; plan to replace the battery module every three to five years to preserve write-cache protection during power loss.

What limit appears first when the dual 750 Watt platinum power supplies run under sustained load?

Each supply delivers 750 W; with two installed the redundant limit is 750 W total, so sustained draw above that triggers throttling or shutdown even though the combined rating is higher.
