Dual 16-Core Xeon 2U Server

The Dell PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rack server equipped with two Intel Xeon Gold 6142 processors running at 2.6 GHz with 16 cores each. It ships with 256 GB of DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC memory across 24 slots and a PERC H730P 2 GB storage controller. Two 400 GB SATA SSDs and redundant 750 W platinum power supplies are included.

Suited for virtualisation and database workloads

This configuration suits organisations running virtualised environments, database clusters or high-throughput applications that benefit from 32 total cores and large memory capacity. The quad-port 1GbE and 10Gb SFP+ networking supports demanding east-west traffic. Buyers who need more than 24 DIMM slots or storage beyond the eight 2.5-inch bays should consider a different platform.

PERC H730P RAID controller decides fit

The integrated PERC H730P controller provides 2 GB cache and supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode for SATA and SAS drives. This determines whether the server can meet specific redundancy and performance requirements for the installed 400 GB SSDs or additional drives. Verify the RAID level and drive count needed before purchase.

Questions about this item

How do I install the 2.5-inch SSDs in the 8-bay front chassis, and which step is often missed?

Slide each 2.5-inch SATA SSD into a front bay until the carrier clicks, then configure the virtual disk in the PERC H730P BIOS before the OS installer runs — skipping the RAID setup leaves the drives invisible to the installer.

What maintenance or replacement will the PERC H730P controller need later?

The H730P includes a 2 GB cache backed by a battery; plan to replace that battery module when iDRAC 9 Enterprise reports a degraded cache-battery status to avoid write-cache loss.

What limit appears first when both Xeon Gold 6142 CPUs run at 3.7 GHz turbo under sustained load?

The dual 750 W platinum power supplies set the thermal and current ceiling; prolonged 3.7 GHz all-core turbo on both 16-core processors can hit the 750 W per supply rating before CPU thermal throttling activates.
