2U rack server with dual 24-core Xeon Platinum 8160 CPUs at 2.1 GHz, 128 GB DDR4, PERC H730P RAID controller, and two 300 GB 10K SAS drives
The DELL PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rack server equipped with two Intel Xeon Platinum 8160 processors, each running at 2.1 GHz with 24 cores. It includes 128GB of DDR4 2666MHz registered ECC memory across eight 16GB modules. The system uses a Dell PERC H730P 2GB 12Gb/s SAS/SATA controller supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60. Two 300GB 10K SAS 2.5-inch drives are installed in an eight-bay chassis.
This configuration suits organisations running virtualised environments or transactional databases that benefit from high core counts and hardware RAID. The quad-port network daughter card provides two 1GbE and two 10Gb SFP+ connections. Buyers who need more than 3TB of memory or require additional drive bays beyond the eight 2.5-inch slots should evaluate alternative platforms. The fixed two-socket limit also restricts further CPU expansion.
The storage controller is the Dell PERC H730P with 2GB cache and battery backup, enabling write-back caching for RAID arrays. It manages SAS and SATA drives through the eight-bay backplane. The installed 300GB 10K SAS drives deliver rotational speed for latency-sensitive workloads. iDRAC 9 Enterprise provides full remote management including virtual console and power control.

Other versions of this model
The controller includes a battery-backed cache module; typical service life is several years before the battery requires replacement.
Thermal and power envelopes of the 2U chassis with dual 750 W PSUs cap all-core turbo under continuous load.
Redundant platinum-efficiency supplies and variable-speed fans keep noise and heat proportional to workload, rising under full CPU utilisation.
