Server Identity

The Dell PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rack server built for virtualization, software-defined storage and high-performance computing. It ships with dual Xeon Gold 6130 processors, 256GB of DDR4 memory and 32TB of enterprise nearline SAS capacity. Windows Server 2022 Standard is included for 16 cores.

Fit And Gaps

This system suits teams that need redundant power, hardware RAID with cache and remote management through iDRAC9. Buyers who require all-flash performance or a different drive interface should look elsewhere. The four 3.5-inch bays are populated, so further internal expansion is limited without external enclosures.

Deciding Specification

The storage subsystem provides 32TB across four 8TB nearline SAS drives spinning at 7.2K RPM behind a PERC H730 controller with 2GB non-volatile cache. This capacity and RAID combination determines whether the server matches the workload.
