Built for virtualization and heavy workloads

The Dell PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rack server designed for dense software-defined storage, virtualization, private cloud and high-performance computing. It targets organisations that need scalable resources and uninterrupted operation for demanding applications.

Dual Xeon Gold 6130 processors with 512GB DDR4

Two Xeon Gold 6130 CPUs each provide 16 cores at 2.10 GHz with a 3.70 GHz turbo frequency and 22MB cache. The system includes 512GB of DDR4 PC4-25600 3200MHz memory across 16 modules, delivering the compute and memory bandwidth these workloads require.

Rail kit included; drives

The server arrives with a rail kit for rack mounting, but the 3.84TB enterprise SSDs and memory modules are packaged separately and must be installed before use. Hot-swappable redundant power supplies allow replacement without downtime, while iDRAC9 Express provides remote management access.

Questions about this item

How does the 30.72 TB of SSD storage perform when the server is running production workloads?

Eight 3.84 TB enterprise SSDs deliver the full 30.72 TB capacity through the PERC H730 RAID controller, providing high-throughput solid-state storage for virtualization and data-intensive applications.

What does the PERC H730 12 Gb/s RAID controller limit in practice?

The H730 manages the eight 2.5-inch SSDs at 12 Gb/s per drive, handling RAID levels and 2 GB of non-volatile cache to sustain consistent I/O performance under heavy load.

What physical space and mounting hardware does the 2U chassis require?

The server occupies 2U of rack height and ships with a rail kit for secure installation in a standard rack cabinet.
