A 2U rack server with dual 20-core Xeon Gold 6148 processors, 512GB DDR4 memory and 30.72TB of enterprise SSD storage

  • Dual 20-core Xeon Gold 6148 CPUs deliver up to 3.70 GHz turbo for heavy workloads
  • 512GB DDR4 3200MHz memory across 16 modules supports dense virtualization
  • 72TB enterprise SSD storage in eight 3.84TB drives provides ultra-fast capacity
  • PERC H730 RAID controller with 2GB NV cache protects data integrity
  • Redundant power supplies and iDRAC9 remote management maintain uptime

Purpose-built density for virtualisation

This Dell PowerEdge R740 2U rack server arrives with dual Xeon Gold 6148 20-core processors at 2.40 GHz and 512 GB of DDR4 PC4-25600 3200 MHz memory. Thirty point seventy-two terabytes of enterprise 2.5-inch SSD storage are supplied across eight 3.84 TB drives. The PERC H730 12 Gb/s RAID controller with 2 GB NV cache manages the array. iDRAC9 Express provides remote management. A rail kit is included for rack mounting.

Integration requirements and operational gains

Dual hot-swappable power supplies allow replacement without downtime. The Broadcom BCM5720 quad-port 1 GbE BASE-T rNDC delivers four network links. Memory and drives are shipped separately and require installation before deployment. The 2U form factor fits standard racks while freeing floor space compared with tower alternatives. Redundant power and remote management reduce on-site maintenance visits.

Upgrade path from older rack platforms

Organisations moving from single-socket or lower-core-count servers gain forty cores and 512 GB of DDR4 in one chassis. The all-flash 30.72 TB array replaces spinning-disk arrays that limit IOPS for databases and virtual desktop infrastructure. The jump is worthwhile when consolidation ratios, licensing costs or rack-space limits demand maximum compute and storage density per 2U. Buyers who need GPU acceleration or fibre-channel connectivity should evaluate other models.
