Dell PowerEdge R740 2U rack server

The Dell PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rack server built for virtualization, dense storage and high-performance computing workloads. It ships new with a rail kit and requires installation of the included memory and drive upgrades.

Dual Xeon Gold 6148 20-core processors

This server suits teams running heavy virtualization, private cloud or software-defined storage who can install 256GB of DDR4 memory and four 16TB SAS drives themselves. It is not for buyers who need a fully assembled system or workloads that demand GPU acceleration.

64TB Enterprise NL SAS storage array

The configuration provides 64TB across four 16TB 3.5-inch Nearline SAS drives at 7.2K RPM behind a PERC H730 RAID controller with 2GB NV cache. Buyers needing different capacity, drive type or controller features should evaluate other options.

Questions about this item

What rack hardware is needed to mount this 2U server?

The server ships with a rail kit and fits a standard 2U rack opening; a compatible rack cabinet is required.

Can the PERC H730 12Gb/s RAID controller use my existing SAS drives?

The PERC H730 12Gb/s controller supports 12Gb/s SAS drives, so older 6Gb/s or 3Gb/s SAS drives will operate at their native speed.

How can I verify the dual Xeon Gold 6148 CPUs and 256GB DDR4 memory are detected correctly?

Check the iDRAC9 Express interface or the system BIOS after first boot; both will list the two 20-core processors and the eight 32GB DDR4 modules.
