2U Rack Server for Virtualisation

The Dell PowerEdge R740 fits into a standard 2U rack space and ships with a single Intel Gold 6148 processor running at 2.4 GHz with 20 cores and 27.5 MB cache. It includes 64 GB of DDR4 memory arranged as four 16 GB modules at 2666 MT/s. Two 480 GB SATA SSDs are pre-installed behind the H730P RAID controller.

Sustained Multi-Core Throughput

The 20-core CPU maintains its 2.4 GHz base frequency across all cores during extended compute tasks such as database indexing or hypervisor scheduling. Redundant 1100 W power supplies keep the system running if one unit fails. iDRAC9 Enterprise provides out-of-band monitoring and firmware updates without interrupting the host operating system.

PCIe Gen 3 Expansion Limits

Up to eight PCIe Gen 3 slots are available for additional network cards, storage controllers or accelerators. The integrated Intel X550 controller already delivers two 10 Gb RJ45 ports and two 1 Gb RJ45 ports for networking. Eight 2.5-inch drive bays set the physical ceiling for internal storage expansion.

Questions about this item

How loud is the 1100W redundant power supply when the Gold 6148 20C runs at full load all day?

The 1100W redundant PSU and system fans scale with the 20-core Gold 6148 load; Dell rates the R740 for continuous operation in data-centre ambient temperatures.

Which rack rails and power cords must I already have to install this 2U server?

Sliding rails and power cords are included in the box, so no extra rack hardware or cables are required for a standard cabinet.

Can the H730P controller and PCIe Gen 3 slots work with my older 2.5-inch SATA drives and expansion cards?

The H730P RAID controller supports legacy SATA SSDs in the 8-bay chassis, and the eight PCIe Gen 3 slots accept older generation add-in cards.
