Dell PowerEdge R740 dual Gold 6126 server

The Dell PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rack server equipped with two Intel Gold 6126 processors, each running at 2.6GHz with 12 cores. It includes 256GB of DDR4 memory across sixteen 16GB modules and four 120GB SATA SSDs managed by an H730P RAID controller. This configuration targets organisations that need dense compute and memory capacity for virtualisation or database workloads.

Installation notes and common issues

The chassis provides eight 2.5-inch drive bays, leaving four bays free for expansion after the factory-installed SSDs. Up to eight PCIe Gen 3 slots are available for additional network or storage cards. Installers should verify that the 1100W redundant power supplies match the facility power distribution and confirm iDRAC9 Enterprise licensing is activated for remote management.

Practical limits of the platform

The server uses PCIe Gen 3 slots, which cap expansion bandwidth compared to newer generations. Memory operates at 2666 MT/s, limiting throughput for memory-intensive applications. The four included 120GB SSDs offer modest capacity, so most deployments will require populating the remaining drive bays. Network connectivity is fixed at two 10Gb and two 1Gb RJ45 ports via the Intel X550 controller.

Questions about this item

How do I confirm the two Gold 6126 processors and 256GB DDR4 are recognised after first boot?

Open the iDRAC9 Enterprise web interface or press F2 at POST to enter System Setup; the CPU inventory will list two 12-core 2.6GHz Gold 6126 chips and memory will show 16x 16GB PC4-2666 modules totalling 256GB.

Which items ship in the box and which must be sourced separately?

The chassis includes bezel (no LCD), sliding rails, two 1100W redundant power supplies and power cords; four 120GB SATA RI SSDs and the H730P RAID controller are pre-installed. Additional 2.5" drives or PCIe cards are not included.

Should I choose the 8-bay 2.5" chassis or a different bay count for this R740?

This unit is the 8x 2.5" drive-bay version; four bays are populated with 120GB SSDs leaving four empty bays for expansion. No other bay-count variant is offered for this configuration.
