Dell EMC PowerEdge R740 Server

The Dell EMC PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rack server built for virtualisation, database and compute workloads. It ships with two Intel Gold 6126 processors, each running at 2.6 GHz with 12 cores and 19.25 MB cache. The system includes 64 GB of DDR4 memory across four 16 GB modules. Four 480 GB SATA SSDs provide storage on the H730P RAID controller.

Build integration and expansion

The chassis supports up to eight 2.5 inch drive bays, leaving four bays free for additional storage. Up to eight PCIe Gen 3 slots are available for network, GPU or storage adapters. The integrated Intel X550 network daughter card delivers two 10 Gb RJ45 and two 1 Gb RJ45 ports. iDRAC9 Enterprise enables full remote management without a dedicated monitor or keyboard.

Thermals, noise and power

Dual 1100 W redundant power supplies share the load and maintain operation if one unit fails. The 2U form factor uses high-speed fans that ramp with CPU and drive activity, producing noticeable airflow noise typical of dense rack servers. Power draw scales with processor utilisation and the number of installed drives and add-in cards.

Questions about this item

How many 2.5-inch drive bays remain free after the four 480GB SATA SSDs are installed?

The chassis provides eight 2.5-inch bays total, so four bays are still open for additional drives.

What is the fan noise level when the dual 1100W redundant power supplies and two Gold 6126 CPUs run continuously?

Dell does not publish a decibel figure for this configuration; expect typical 2U rack noise under full load.

Which rails and power cords are included so the server can be mounted and powered immediately?

The shipment includes sliding rails and two power cords matching the redundant 1100W supplies.
