A 2U rack server with dual 14-core Gold 6132 CPUs, 256GB DDR4, dual 960GB SAS SSDs on an H730P controller and iDRAC9 Enterprise remote management
The Dell PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rackmount server built for virtualisation and database workloads. It ships with two Intel Gold 6132 processors running at 2.6 GHz, each providing 14 cores. The system includes 256 GB of DDR4 memory across 16 modules and a PERC H730P RAID controller. Dual 960 GB SAS SSDs come pre-installed in the front bays.
This server fits organisations that need high core counts and large memory capacity in a compact 2U form factor. The eight 2.5-inch drive bays and eight PCIe Gen 3 slots support storage expansion and additional network or accelerator cards. Buyers who require GPU acceleration should look elsewhere, as the chassis does not accommodate full-length double-width graphics cards. The lack of an optical drive also means installation media must be provided via USB or network boot.
The included PERC H730P controller manages the two 960 GB SAS SSDs and any additional drives added to the remaining six bays. It supports RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 with 2 GB of non-volatile cache. This single component dictates which drive configurations are possible and the performance characteristics of the storage subsystem. Verify that your desired RAID topology and drive count are compatible with this controller before purchase.

Slide each 960GB SAS SSD into a 2.5 inch bay until it locks, then use iDRAC9 Enterprise to create a virtual disk on the H730P RAID controller; the step often missed is initializing the array before installing the OS.
The 1100W redundant PSUs are hot-swappable; replace a failed unit without downtime. Clean front-panel fan filters every few months to maintain airflow through the 2U chassis.
The 1100W redundant power supply capacity is the first ceiling; sustained full-load draw from two 14-core CPUs, 16 DDR4 DIMMs and eight drive bays can approach the PSU rating before thermal throttling activates.
