Dell EMC PowerEdge R740 2U Server

The Dell EMC PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rack server built for virtualisation, database and high-performance computing workloads. Dual Intel Gold 6132 processors provide 14 cores each at 2.6 GHz with 19.25 MB cache. 32 GB of DDR4 memory and six 480 GB SATA SSDs are installed on an H730P RAID controller.

Suits consolidated workloads, not GPU-heavy builds

This server suits organisations that need dense compute and fast local storage in a 2U form factor. The eight 2.5-inch drive bays and up to eight PCIe Gen 3 slots support additional storage or networking cards. Buyers who require GPU acceleration or larger memory footprints should evaluate other platforms.

H730P RAID controller with six 480 GB SATA SSDs

The installed H730P controller manages the six 480 GB SATA SSDs in hardware RAID, delivering protected high-speed storage out of the box. Two drive bays remain open for capacity expansion. Confirm that the RAID level and drive count match the application's redundancy and performance requirements.

Questions about this item

What PCIe generation do the I/O slots use and what does that mean for expansion cards?

The server provides up to eight PCIe Gen 3 slots, so any card you install will negotiate at Gen 3 speeds rather than newer Gen 4 or Gen 5 rates.

What rack depth and rail kit are required to mount the 2U chassis?

The unit is a 2U rack server that ships with sliding rails included; it fits standard 19-inch racks but you must verify your cabinet depth accommodates the full chassis length.

How is the H730P RAID controller installed and what step is often missed?

The H730P comes pre-installed in a dedicated internal slot; the step people miss is creating the virtual disks in the controller BIOS before the OS installer can see any storage volumes.
