Built for high-density storage

The Dell PowerEdge R740 chassis holds eight 3.5" drive bays and ships with two Xeon Gold 6134 processors at 3.2GHz. 1TB of DDR4 ECC registered memory and a PERC H730P RAID controller support virtualization, database and backup workloads. Integrated graphics and a 10GbE 562T adapter handle console and network traffic. The system is sold without drives so you can populate the bays to match capacity and performance needs.

Verify rack space and drive selection

The unit measures 36 by 24 by 10 inches and weighs 40 pounds, so confirm your rack depth and weight allowance before ordering. No drives are installed; choose SATA drives compatible with the PERC H730P controller and the eight available bays. Two 750W power supplies are fitted; ensure your PDU connectors and circuit capacity match. A rail kit is available on request if your cabinet requires it.

Dual 750W supplies share load

Redundant 750W power supplies operate in a balanced configuration, reducing per-unit strain and fan speed during typical operation. Firmware and BIOS are updated to the latest stable release before shipment, and each server completes a full burn-in test. Remote management via iDRAC9 Enterprise allows temperature, fan and power monitoring without physical access. Expect enterprise-grade acoustic levels suited to a data-centre environment.

Questions about this item

What comes in the box with the PowerEdge R740 and what must I source separately?

The server ships with two Xeon Gold 6134 processors at 3.2 GHz, 1 TB of DDR4 ECC registered memory, a PERC H730P RAID controller, a 10 Gb dual-port 562T network adapter, two 750 W power supplies and the iDRAC9 Enterprise licence. No 3.5-inch drives or rail kit are included; both are optional extras.

Which drive-bay version should I choose for this chassis?

The R740 8LFF chassis provides eight 3.5-inch SATA bays; select this version when you need high-capacity hard drives rather than the 2.5-inch bay alternative.

What does the 1 TB DDR4 figure mean for actual workloads?

1 TB of DDR4 ECC registered memory lets you run large virtualisation clusters, in-memory databases or heavy analytics jobs without swapping, while the 3 TB maximum leaves room for future growth.
