Rack server with dual Xeon Gold 6226R processors, 32 GB DDR4 memory, eight 3.5-inch drive bays and a PERC H730P RAID controller
The Dell PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rack server built around two Intel Xeon Gold 6226R processors running at 2.9 GHz. Each CPU provides 16 cores and 22 MB of cache, delivering 32 threads for virtualisation, database or compute workloads. The system ships with 32 GB of DDR4 ECC registered memory in a two-module configuration. It is aimed at IT teams that need a dense, dual-socket platform without pre-installed storage drives.
The chassis supports up to eight 3.5-inch SATA drive bays, leaving the storage layout entirely to the buyer. A Dell PERC H730P RAID controller is installed, providing hardware RAID levels for the drives you add. Two 750 W power supplies are fitted for redundancy. Remote management is handled by iDRAC9 with an Enterprise licence, and a 10 GbE two-port 562T adapter supplies high-speed networking. No GPU beyond integrated graphics is present, so the server suits headless or compute-only roles.
Under continuous load the dual 750 W supplies share the draw, keeping the system running if one unit fails. BIOS and firmware are updated to the latest stable release before shipment, and a full burn-in test verifies thermal stability. The 32 GB memory ceiling can be expanded toward the 3 TB maximum when workloads grow. Buyers who need pre-populated drives, a larger initial memory footprint or a dedicated accelerator card should look at a different configuration.
