Dual-socket Xeon rack server

The Dell PowerEdge R740 chassis houses two Intel Xeon Silver 4114 processors at 2.2GHz, each providing 10 cores and 13.75MB cache. A total of 1536GB DDR4 ECC registered memory is installed across the system. Eight 3.5-inch drive bays support SATA drives, while a PERC H730P RAID controller manages storage arrays. An integrated 10GbE two-port 562T adapter handles network connectivity.

Thermals and power in normal use

Dual 750W power supplies deliver redundant power for the dual-CPU configuration and memory load. The 2U rack form factor fits standard data-centre airflow designs. Remote management through iDRAC9 Enterprise allows monitoring of temperatures, fan speeds and power draw without physical access. Firmware is updated to the latest stable version before shipment.

Included accessories and software impact

The server ships without drives, letting you choose capacity and redundancy to match workload requirements. A rail kit is available on request for rack installation. The iDRAC9 Enterprise licence enables full remote console, virtual media and lifecycle automation out of the box. All BIOS and firmware updates are applied during pre-ship burn-in testing.

Questions about this item

How do I install the R740 into a rack and what step is often missed?

Mount the rail kit first, then slide the 36 x 24 x 10 in chassis in and secure both front and rear brackets — the rear brackets are the step most often missed.

What maintenance will the 1536GB DDR4 memory need later?

DDR4 ECC registered modules are sealed and require no scheduled maintenance; replacement is only needed if a DIMM fails diagnostics.

What limit appears first when the 2x Xeon Silver 4114 CPUs run sustained workloads?

The 750W power supplies set the thermal and power ceiling before the 10-core processors hit their maximum turbo frequency.
