Server configuration and purpose

This Dell PowerEdge R740 arrives as a 2U rack server fitted with two Intel Xeon Bronze 3204 processors running at 1.9 GHz. The system includes 256 GB of DDR4 ECC registered memory and a PERC H730P RAID controller. Eight 3.5-inch drive bays are ready for SATA hard drives or SSDs, while dual 750 W supplies and an iDRAC9 Enterprise licence handle power and remote management.

Who this suits and who should look elsewhere

The twin six-core CPUs and large memory pool suit virtualisation hosts, database nodes or backup targets that need many drive slots in a compact rack footprint. Buyers who need more than two processor sockets, faster clock speeds or GPU acceleration will not find those capabilities in this chassis. The platform also lacks pre-installed storage, so a separate drive purchase is required before deployment.

The specification that decides fit

The PERC H730P controller manages RAID across the eight 3.5-inch SATA bays, defining how many drives you can add and which RAID levels are available. Matching your capacity and redundancy plan to this controller and bay count is the single factor that determines whether the server meets the workload.

Questions about this item

Does this server need any drives installed before it can boot?

The chassis has eight 3.5" bays but no drives are included; you must supply SATA drives for storage.

Will the PERC H730P RAID controller work with the 10 GbE 562T network adapter already fitted?

Yes, both are installed in the R740 and operate independently; the controller manages storage while the adapter handles networking.

How can I confirm the iDRAC9 Enterprise licence is active after first power-on?

Connect to the iDRAC IP, log in and the dashboard will show Enterprise features such as virtual console and remote firmware update enabled.
