The Dell PowerEdge R740xd is a 2U rack server built for storage-heavy workloads. It ships with twelve 3.5-inch SATA bays populated by twelve 6 TB 7.2 K hard drives. Dual Xeon Gold 6130 processors provide 16 cores each at 2.1 GHz with a 3.7 GHz turbo. 512 GB of DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC memory fills sixteen of twenty-four slots.

This configuration targets software-defined storage, service-provider hosting and virtual desktop infrastructure where drive count matters. Buyers who need all-flash arrays or GPU-accelerated compute should look elsewhere. The system maxes at two processors and 3 TB of memory, so larger scale-up deployments will require additional nodes. The installed Dell PERC H730P 12 Gb/s SAS/SATA controller supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, 60 and pass-through modes. Its 2 GB battery-backed cache protects in-flight writes during power loss. Redundant 750 W platinum power supplies, iDRAC 9 Enterprise, rails and bezel complete the package.
