12-Bay 3.5" Rack Server

The Dell PowerEdge R740xd is a 2U rack-mount server fitted with twelve 3.5-inch drive bays and dual Intel Xeon Gold 6148 processors running at 2.4 GHz. It ships with 128 GB of DDR4 ECC registered memory and a PERC H730P RAID controller. The unit includes integrated graphics, a 10 GbE two-port 562T adapter and iDRAC9 Enterprise remote management. No drives are installed, allowing the buyer to populate storage as required.

Suited For And Not Suited For

This server suits organisations that need high internal capacity for SATA hard drives and want a platform that supports up to 3 TB of DDR4 memory across two sockets. It also fits workloads that benefit from ten-core CPUs with 27.5 MB cache each. Buyers who require more than twelve 3.5-inch bays or who need a different drive form factor should evaluate other chassis. Teams without rack infrastructure or who prefer tower form factors will not be able to use this unit.

Deciding Specification

The defining specification is the twelve 3.5-inch SATA drive bays combined with the PERC H730P controller, which determines how many large-capacity hard drives can be installed and managed in a single 2U rack space.

Questions about this item

Should I pick the 12-bay 3.5-inch chassis or a different bay count for this R740xd?

This unit is the 12-bay 3.5-inch LFF chassis; choose it when you need maximum 3.5-inch drive density in a 2U rack server.

What does the 2.4 GHz clock on the dual Xeon Gold 6148 CPUs deliver in actual workloads?

Two 10-core Xeon Gold 6148 processors at 2.4 GHz provide 20 cores and 40 threads with 27.5 MB cache each, suited for virtualization and database tasks.

How does the PERC H730P controller and SATA interface affect drive performance?

The PERC H730P RAID controller manages the 12 SATA drive bays with hardware RAID, so drive throughput is capped by the SATA link speed.
