A 12-bay 3.5" rack server with dual Xeon Platinum 8160 CPUs, 512GB DDR4 ECC memory, PERC H730P RAID controller and dual 1100W power supplies, drives not included
The Dell PowerEdge R740xd chassis holds twelve 3.5-inch drive bays behind a 2U rack footprint, making it a high-density platform for capacity-hungry workloads. Two Xeon Platinum 8160 processors deliver 24 cores each at 2.1 GHz with 33 MB cache, and 512 GB of DDR4 ECC registered memory is already installed. The PERC H730P RAID controller manages SATA drives, while a 10 GbE 562T dual-port adapter and iDRAC9 Enterprise handle networking and remote management.
The unit ships with dual 1100 W power supplies, rails available on request, and all firmware pre-updated to the latest stable release. Installation consists of racking the 36 x 24 x 10 inch, 40-pound chassis, seating the drives into the hot-swap bays, and cabling power and network. The main friction point is drive provisioning: no drives are included, so you must source compatible SATA disks and configure RAID arrays before the array becomes usable.
Confirm that twelve 3.5-inch SATA drives satisfy your capacity and IOPS targets, because the backplane does not support other form factors. The memory subsystem maxes out at 3 TB, so the current 512 GB leaves room to grow but cannot exceed that limit. Ensure your rack provides adequate depth and airflow for a 2U server with dual power supplies, and that your management tools can consume iDRAC9 Enterprise features.

The iDRAC9 Enterprise remote management interface will show both 24-core processors running at 2.1GHz and all 512GB of DDR4 ECC Registered memory in the system inventory before the OS loads.
The box contains the R740xd with 2x 1100W power supplies, PERC H730P RAID controller, 10GB 2-port 562T adapter, and rail kit on request; no 3.5" drives are installed so SATA HDDs or SSDs must be purchased separately.
The 12LFF designation means twelve 3.5-inch bays; with zero drives installed all twelve bays are available for adding SATA storage up to the PERC H730P limits.
